I was inspired to make this piece by a walk in some woodland where the leaves are just starting to turn colour and nuts and seeds are in abundance. Also by a documentary, I saw about Medieval embroidery.
This highly textured picture was made using several different methods. For the richly coloured leaves, I made a pre- felt and layered snippets of fabric, threads and silk fibres between cobweb layers of merino. I then laid out the rest of the design before cutting the pre-felt into leaf shapes and felting them on to the base. The yarn, which twirls around the leaves and seed pods, was handspun by me from my sheep’s fleece. It was then dyed with a dye which I made from rose hips. The fluffy, white seed are made from soybean fibres. Once the felt was dry I machine stitched around the main components to make them stand out and then added lots of hand stitching.
The artwork comes already stretched onto an artist’s canvas and the felt continues all around the sides of the canvas.
